Urgent or Emergent

Patient Care

Insert IV catheter (#16 or #18 gauge)

Insert foley catheter (#14 french, to closed drainage) in operating room (OR) or in patient room if time permits

Medications

Give both ranitidine and metoclopramide together in 50 mL 0.9% sodium chloride (NS) minibag

Ranitidine 50 mg IV STAT infused over 15 min

PLUS

Metoclopramide 10 mg IV STAT infused over 15 min

PLUS

Sodium citrate 30 mL PO for STAT case, once on admission to OR

For other urgent or emergent cases, obtain order from anesthesiologist

Antibiotic

  • Body mass index is less than 40 kg/m²: 2 g IV STAT or prior to skin incision
  • Body mass index is greater than or equal to 40 kg/m²: 3 g IV STAT or prior to skin incision

OR

Women with documented allergy to cefazolin or type IV hypersensitivity reaction e.g. Stevens-Johnson syndrome, to beta lactams

IV Infusions

Sodium Chloride 0.9% (NS) infuse at 125 mL/h

Laboratory

Complete blood cell count with automated white blood cell differential

Group and Screen STAT (if needed)
